Nut is the expert - she might see this post later. We mow ours at the end of aug/beginning sept, and then keep it short til March next year when we leave it to its own devices again.
Hi Aileen, not sure if I'm an expert.
Is this a grass meadow or wildflowers growing in cultivated soil?
It looks like the latter, you can pull them up or cut them down when they're not pleasing you any more. Save some seed from the annuals or just let them seed. Treat them like any other annual and perennial mix. Pull up the annuals, cut back the perennials. Over time you might find some species becoming dominant and others decreasing. You can cut back the dominant ones before they seed for a season and reduce them that way.
If it is a grass meadow the chicky's treatment is right.
In the sticks near Peterborough
If mainly annuals cut once seeds have fallen. If perennials can cut now. If mainly graa should be cut before it seeds and debris removed
