what onions variety would be good for pickling we prefer small to med I would like to grow my own for next year.

Round shallots are what I use. I buy sets in Spring, but actually I haven't bought any for a bit as they keep so well I just plant some I grew the year before. That doesn't work with onions, only shallots.
marshalls sell silverskin onion seed and a larger brown skin (zittau) suitable for pickling.
Like Busy-Lizzie I much prefer pickled shallots but as fidgetbones says silverskin are the ones most commonly used for small/medium pickled onions.
