I allowed some seeds to grow which had been dropped when filling my bird feeder,
They are sunflowers. One has one flower and the other has seventeen.
Is this unusual?
17 is very impressive Walter. I've never had any sunflowers from the bird food, only wheat, millet and unidentified other grasses.
Well it just depends where the bird seed came from. There are lots of multi-stemmed sunflowers, but usually the birds polish off all the seed so it doesn't get a chance to germinate.
Hi again, This is my sunflower.Should I save the seeds and feed the world?
We've had an unusual year with sunflowers too.... Lots of random ones appeared round the garden (we didn't plant them) and they have multiple heads (and a lot of ladybirds too). I read something about cutting off the largest flower when its done and placing it the ground for the birds to feed off. We've got some different bird food also, the kind that does have grass seed in.
