Hi all

I bought a box of 'seed and sow' from the Pound Shop this spring and used it like shake and vac in the garden, and liberally sprinkled on the ground. i then gave the remains of the box to a friend.

One of the flowers that grew is pictured below. I really like it but have no idea what it is. Therefore, would someone please assist with it's identification. As it is so lovely I was wondering if it would produce seeds and if so, can anyone let me know how I can collect them for growing next year?

Many thanks

  • Hi 4thPanda, it's night scented stock, Matthiola longipetala.  Easily confirm by the strong evening fragrance.  Not all that much to look at, but one of the most powerful scents there is. image  I love it!

Thanks Bob. The box was a 'scents' one. Do you know if I can collect seeds from it? Would love to grow it next year image

  • Yes, you should be able to.  It will (hopefully) form long seed pods if the flowers have been pollinated.  When the lowest pods turn brownish and start opening by themselves you can snip them off and keep them in a paper bag or envelope etc.  The seeds are very, very small and I find it difficult to sow them evenly.  Best sown in-situ as they don't transplant well in my experience, but if you want to try sow in small pots or modules and plant-out the whole thing rather than trying to separate seedlings.
