is it too late to prune a lilac tree?

I have a large lilac tree which needs shaping / trimming back. Should I wait until after it flowers nnext year or can I get away with it now, possibly just removing the branches I don't want. Thanks.

The buds for the following year develop very soon after it finishes flowering so by trimming it you will lose the flowers on those branches but thats all. If its pretty mature I doubt you'll even notice!
