  • I like to grow several varieties each year, and last year I grew Ferline for first time. They were prolific, healthy and tasty for a large Tom.
But my overall favourites are Sungold and Gardeners Delight, yum!
  • Last year I tried Golden Nugget, a heritage yellow cherry tom, compact, determinate, around 1" in size, thin-skinned, heavy cropping and absolutely bursting with flavour. It's now replaced Sungold as my fave. Give it a go.
  • The best tomato that I have tasted lately was from the seeds that I got with my Gardener's World magazine in 2009. The flavour was fantastic and the best I had tasted since my earlier days of Sweet 100's (cherry type) and Beefstake (large yummy tomatoes). If you can find out what the 2009 tomato was, try it again, outside.
  • Black Russian, unbelievable flavour and yield

Costoluto Fiorintino, great big Italian cooking tomatoes = kept me in ragu and stews through the winter
  • hi kate
dont be offended by mr spud, tomato growing is great fun,and oh my tomatoes are waitrose's i take the seeds out and off i go,been doing it for years and had loads
    good luck x
  • I'm with the plum tomatoes ... Roma - perfect for cooking, also the little plum tomatoes, (can't remember the names) yellow and red ones for salads or just picking whilst your gardening. ;-)
  • Try Ferline. I've grown them in a greehouse for the past 4-5 years and have been delighted by the flavour and productivity. Great on salad or used in cooking. Neighbours like them too.
  • i've been growing tomatoes for 2 years, love it, sungold have been the best so far, but would like to try others, we had loads last year, so we made chutney with some of them, which has quality, well up for the milder weather so i can get planting again, will be tuning in to see the welcome return of monty tomorrow, helps one get in the mood for the garden.
  • I am sticking to gardeners delight although i am trying Alan Tichmarch organic and one other ,just to see if there is any difference.
I grew Gardeners delight and sweet million last year, which were very bitter and to me the worst tomatoes ever.
Ihave already some young tomatoes and peppers growing on the windowsill hopefully I will have some early tomatoes.
Will probably have a go at Sungold if I an find the seed
  • Hi
Grew Piccollo grafted tomatoes in my shady unheated porch last year - taste and crop were fantastic. Sweetest tomatoes I have ever tasted, plants produced more than we could eat and kept going until mid November!
Grafted toms well worth the extra cost.
