fallen leaves

For the past few years, I have collected all leaves which have fallen of my apple and plum trees and just spread them over my veg. patch and let nature take place but now wondering if I would be better to collect them all up and put them in suitable container.

I would point out that by spring time all the leaves have vanished

I've always collected mine and put them in a purpose built container as they rot down more slowly than other stuff in a compost bin and  leaf mould makes a lovely mulch.  If you don't have a separate container you can shred them first- even with a lawnmower- before adding them to a compost bin which gets them going more quickly. If your method works for you is there a particular reason why you want to do it differently?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I put mine in a plastic bag with a drainage hole in the bottom and ever so often after the bag is full ,water.leave till the following spring.

If it  ain't broke Tom, don't fix it?  I gather all ours up into pierced black bin liners and they become lovely leaf mulch which gets used all over the place - I don't mow them but it does seem a good idea, I might try that Fairygirl, thanks.
