Tree disease

Two trees in my garden are effected by either some sort of insect or disease. I took pictures of it but I don't see any way of posting them here. They are small white spots, they look fluffy, and they start off with a some sort of flat brown shell on top and then they white stuff creates underneath, that's what makes me think it might be an insect. It started on one tree and then went to the one next to it. I don't know anything about gardening, so I can't tell you the names of the trees. I would really appreciate any advice! Kind regards, Kay

  • Can you post some link of the pictures instead? So we can properly identify what it is. Where did you saw the white spots? Is it on the leaves?

Sounds like scale insect. Are there thousands of them or just a few?  If a few you can squish them with the blunt end of a knife. They slow the plant down a bit if they are in large numbers.

  • Thanks very much!

Here is the link to the images:

Also one one of the trees the bottom leaves seem to be effected...unless it's a seperate issue...

  • I agree with waterbutts. Those are scale insects.

It will kill the tree if it is heavily infestated. Get rid of them ASAP.

  • Thanks very much Blissful Gardener and Waterbutts!

So you think the way to get rid of them is "squish them with the blunt end of a knife"? I will do it this weekend! I guess there are not that many of them yet!
