Advice on Apple Tree

Hi all

After living in our current house for over 10 years and always having neglected the garden we have rediscovered it this year and are now very enthusiastic amateurs!!

We have an old apple tree, pic attached, which has always produced a heavy crop but alot of the apples are usually damaged in some way either by birds or other creepy crawlies.  This has never been a problem as we haven't really bothered with it before.  However this year we have been picking some of the good ones and very much enjoying eating them from the tree.

My question is whether there is a way to protect the fruits or deter the nibblers - as the tree is very ornamental and in the middle of the main garden I am loathe to net it. The other options I was considering is to buy a new apple tree to plant in the back area of our garden which we are trying to turn into an allotment - we could net it, or fruit cage, and use this for apple crop and leave the older one to its own devices.

Any thoughts welcome!
