Essential reading/subscriptions for a new Gardener

I have just moved and for the first time I have my own small back garden.
Other than Gardener's World I am interested to know which other gardening magazines, websites and books you enjoy or recommend for a new gardener who is just about to start their RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development.
There is a future plan to have a career change into gardening and garden design - so anything that will bring me inspiration, confidence, understanding and knowledge in how to garden would be great!

Garden News is an ok read and occasionally I read the Amateur Gardener, but mainly GW and RHS magazines, and the Expert series by D.G.Hessayon. And any gardening book my dad gave me.
For books, two of my 'bibles' are the RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening and Reader Digest "The Gardening Year" - both available from Amazon etc for very little money. Older copies won't have up-to-date plants in them of course although the general advice is still as relevant as it ever was.
For good general gardening reading, anything by Christopher Lloyd. Lots of others folk here have recommended books in the past - try using the Site Seach option at the top and enter "good books".

In the sticks near Peterborough
I did the RHS level 2 a couple of years ago. I found the books - Principles of Horticulture alongside the RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and flowers all helpful for the course.
The little books called RHS practicals which i used to get second hand of ebay very helpful.
GW magazine is great for tips and for inspiration.
Other than that I am always being nosey and looking at other peoples gardens for ideas
As well as The Garden (RHS) and GW, I also subscribe to The English Garden and find that each of these complements the other two.
I'm a TEG fan too (am i allowed to say that here ?? I subscribe to GW too, of course)
Thanks for all your book and magazine recommendations - espcially to steebe for advising me of the books you used when studying RHS Level 2 certificate - will keep my eye out for those.
