From Monty Don's piece about compost recently, I am now aware that I need to introduce a lot of carbon based material to balance the high level of nitrogen based material at this time. I have access to wood shavings and saw dust from a carpenters shop and wanted to check how viable this material would be for incorporating into a compost heap?

I put tree shreddings on mine, and straight on the garden, or on top of a layer of horse muck on the garden. Never had a problem I could blame on that. You'd need to be sure you hadn't got wood that had been treated with anything the plants wouldnt like

I wouldn't put the material you specify on the compost heap. If you need brown waste for the compost use cardboard - the wiggy worms love it - and shredded paper, or straw.
The wood material is good as a weed surpressing mulch.
Most softwood timber will have been treated wth preservatives - you don't want more of that on your compost heap than you can help
