How large/old is the tree? Have you had it long?

Has it been damaged by anything hitting it?

Are there any small brown mushrooms near the base of it or any black string-like strands round it under the soil?

waterbutts I cannot see any brown mushrooms , going to check the soil when it is cooler this evening . But for now,  this is some of its history.

It is about 50 years old ( it was inherited )  and about 35 foot .

The only thing  I can think of it  could  have been hit with  :  is a lawn mower  but even that I am not sure . We have been here for 15 yrs . and it looked okay then . But each year it has always  produced  nuts in 3 stages / forms .  we get the june drop ,which is normal . then around september they start falling . some  walnuts that have  not produced or formed properly . (1) It is a jelly like  stuff inside (2)  or a black dry skin over the nut itself . The nuts with the black skin is white nut inside and eatable . (3) Then we get the very enjoyable walnut  ,  crisp white nut  with a moist  thin pealable skin . And these are lovely .
