pumkins

Hi my son and I planted a pumpkin this year for the first time , it has grown huge and has so many flowers and is starting to fruit do we need remove the smaller fruit so we get one large pumpkin alot of them drop off anyway . Any ideas thanks?

    Which variety? image If it's one of the bigger ones, they reckon you should limit each plant to a few fruits, so the the plant can put all it's oomph into it. Therefore, if you leave lots of fruits on, the resulting pumpkins won't be as big.

    It needs to be a naturally large variety - eg, Atlantic Giant - in order to produce a huge pumpkin by restricting the number of pumpkins on the vine. Otherwise, removing pumpkins from the vine only reduces your crop.

    Pumpkins that don't develop in size and drop off are the result of the female flowers not being pollinated, either properly or at all.
