Begonia corms

MeomyeMeomye Posts: 821
I have just been given some Begonia corms that had been stored away of the winter. Is it ok to plant them out yet? and if I intend to put them in pots what soil do they need and how deep do I plant them? tia

You can start the corms  off in a seed tray  in any multi purpose compost,  just lay them on the top and slightly push into the compost,  water the compost lightly not the middle of the corm.  when the shoots get to about 3 to 4” tall you can pot them on, leaving them level as they were in the trays.
They should be ready to plant out in pots or basket around May to June depending on your climate.  For me it’s usually near to June.
Here are mine at the moment.   They need turning regularly they lean to the light.  I will pot them on today.

Thank you @Lyn, so when they go out later how deep do I plant them?

You plant them out just as they look in the tray,  corms on the top of the compost.  Don’t bury them at all.

Those big ones of mine go in pots in the front garden which gets no sun at all until the evening

@Lyn, they are beautiful, thank you for your help. Begonias are lovely aren't they but don't often get a mention on here.  Apologies for not noticing you had already addressed my last question previously!

@Meomye I think they went out of fashion a while back,  my parents used to grow them years ago, they loved them,  I like some but not the big red or yellow ‘blousy’ ones as my daughter calls them.
The ones I have were theirs,  I keep them going although my parents died in 2015 and 16,  so I grow them in their memory.
I used to grow them inside but it’s seems much hotter now and it’s hard work looking after them so I thinned them out a bit and grow the remainder outside,

Thanks @Lyn for sharing your amazing pictures and thoughts on Begonias. I have just bought some more and will treat as you suggested. Apologies if I am being thick here but could you tell me if there is a 'right' way up because I can't tell ! thank you.

They are a bit boat shaped sort of dip in the middle that’s the top ,  rounded at the bottom,  if your not sure you could post a photo.
