It's gorse. Did you try sniffing it? Quite perfumed, bit like pineapple.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

meaning it’s almost always blooming.

Yes, it's Gorse. Always smells of coconut and vanilla to me!
