New user names - what's going on?

I've noticed a lot of newer members have long series of random letters and numbers after their names.  Can anyone help me understand what this is? It's a new thing, right?

Is it just the way people prefer to set their user names now, or is it a glitch in the system?  At first I just assumed they must be bots or something, but they do seem to be genuine (I guess!)

To me it looks like (yet another) glitch whereby the name and password fields are being added together.

Not sure what you mean by that?

The names can be changed, but often it's a convoluted process, and if changes aren't saved, that won't work either. Sometimes it's necessary to logout and back in, which is bonkers.
Too many silly problems not being addressed by the powers that be IMO.

The problem appeared quite a long time ago but, as with other issues, nothing ever gets fixed.

Hi @Busy-Lizzie I hadn't spotted the new user names. And none of the new users themselves have flagged the problem. But I'll ask for it to be looked into.

Thank you @Catherine Mansley. Some new users have mentioned it but haven't flagged it so it just gets lost in the posts.

I have seen discussions where the one who opened it had just 1 post, and you all wrote your keyboards hot, but they never replied. Then they opened another discussion, same pattern.
