Are people really that stupid?

Just read something on msn (yeah, completely reliable...not) - & here's part of it:

A botanist and renowned BBC presenter has warned against "poisoning" after being alerted that M&S were selling daffodils next to vegetables. James Wong called on the store to train its staff after seeing a photo of the flowers being sold in the vegetable aisle.

He wrote on Twittrer: "Gosh, my mum sent me this…Daffodils are the single most common cause of plant-based poisoning as people mistake their bulbs (even cut flower buds) for crops in the onion family."

On top of that, the rees-mogg is getting a tv series - please tell me that ain't so?

I know, but I just can't believe it!
    I mean ---WHAT?
Btw, if anyone on M&S staff tells me not to eat daffodils, I think a headbut is probably in order.

It's not the first time - eg this from 2015
Apparently there's an oriental vegetable that looks a lot like daffodils in tight bud, so if someone was familiar with that but not with the bunches of cut daffs that we get in the shops in spring here, they could make the mistake without being stupid.

  • I remember reading something about this in the news years ago and managed to dig up this article:

    And this in 2015:

Ok, I have to concede defeat here - but I'm still horrified that humans don't know not to eat them.  We apparently don't learn, do we?

I don't think that's a fair comparison.  It's a choice, based on lunacy, I grant you that, but not based on ignorance.

If you start smoking knowing it might kill you, you're pretty stupid. IMHO
More so than accidentally eating something you didn't know was toxic
