summat's up with these Alders

Can anyone cast any light on what is happening with these Alders please. I think the future looks bad for them. I have lost a couple over the last few years but they didn't show this symptom. It look like they're leaking rusty water but the wet might be down to the weather.

Looks like it doesn't it. Thanks Steephill. I'd put the previous losses down to Phytophthora but they hadn't shown this sign.

I agree, just found the same on the RHS website…

Phytophthora bleeding cankers are infections of the bark of trees by various species of the fungus-like organism Phytophthora. Infection causes bark lesions (cankers) that bleed a dark or reddish-brown sticky fluid.

Oh what a shame @nutcutlet … alders are one of my favourite trees 😢

They've been great, they were planted by the previous owner and were tiny when we arrived, small enough to move a couple of them. (30 years ago). A branch of Alder with catkins makes a good Christmas tree

There was a huge beauty leaning elegantly over the edge of the pond by the farmyard when I was a child. I absolutely adored it. That beautiful reddish glow of the catkins … magical.
