Slugs are always the problem here. I do clumps with lots of plants - much easier. You can always prick out some later on if they're getting far too crowded.
It's always a balance with pots. I grow quite a lot in them -often because of the slug problem, but we don't have the amount of dry weather the south gets, so it's a bit easier re the watering. Things like sweet peas or dahlias still need plenty because of the density of foliage once they get going. Other plants are the same, so it's always an ongoing experiment wherever we live
