Bird bath problem

I have a metal bird bath which has started to rust. Can anyone suggest a non-toxic waterproofing paint that I can coat it with to stop it rusting? All the products I have researched so far carry a health warning when it comes to wildlife. All suggestions welcome.

Could you have it sandblasted and powder coated?

If no one here can help, you could try contacting the RSPB .

Does the wildlife health warning apply to the paint when it's in its liquid form or when it's dry?
I can understand that it would be very toxic in liquid form, but is it still toxic when dry?

    I was thinking that.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thanks for your thoughts folks. I'll try contacting Hammerite to see if their product is indeed safe when dry. And you're right, the RSPB should have some thoughts on the matter. I'll send them a Tweet :-)

I was a member of the fish club st school (1970's) where we each had a tropical aquarium to look after.
I cleaned mine out, rubbed down the rusty bits on the frame and painted it with a dark green hammerite . It did stink until it was dry but the fish were fine and very pleased with their smart tank.
I'd imagine it's even safer these days, but best to make sure.

  • Thanks Pete. Have emailed Hammerite (and RSPB) so watch this space!
