Covering existing turf

Hi, I'm leveling my garden and have built a retaining wall. I now need to create the level up to the retaining wall and this currently slopes towards the wall and is turfed. My question is do I need to dig up the existing turf before leveling or can I just cover the turf with soil?

Thanks in advance!

It depends on what your plans are for the area once it's levelled up

  • Thanks Pete!

Yes good point, once it's level I'll be laying fresh turf

I'd imagine the old lawn would need to be dug over at least in the first instance, but it's not something I have any experience of.
    Maybe @MrMow could advise

  • Am doing nearly the very same thing on a small scale. The short wall has some turfs that were cut from elsewhere and spare soil added on top to fill the space. In the spring I will probably level and seed it. Some bits of the grass are still alive although wasn't intended.
  • Leave it and sling the soil on top, I can't think of a good reason to take it up.

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure if that would be a good thing or not
