Beech hedge query

I have a long beech hedge that’s only about 2 years old. Will the plants suffer if I don’t prune them and just let them grow to whatever height they want? I’ve no issue with neighbours.

There shouldn't be a problem - but you might find that they get quite sparse and leggy at the bottom. That's usually where you want them to be thick and dense for screening etc. Pruning them (ie cutting the hedge) helps them to thicken up and bush out at the base. Left to their own devices they'll grow into lots of little beech trees.

Just trim the tops off ,but they’ll be fine just left alone . Depends what look you’re going for , trim them and they’ll thicken up ,leave them and they’ll stay loose ,but either way leaving them won’t harm them ,which was your original question.
  • Thank you. Good to know they’ll be fine. One job less this autumn 😊
