Just brought this Just brought this Anemone in a 3L pot - can I divide it before planting in the border or will that kill it? I've heard Anemones are temperamental! Thanks
I'd like to see any answers to this too as I'd like to divide some Anemone Wild Swan but like you have heard they can be temperamental. The Japenese ones seem to be tough as old boots so hopefully all that way inclined.
I don't think they like being divided. Lots of people call them invasive thugs but I bought 4 more than 20 years ago and now I have 5 or 6, none of which grow very strongly. I tried to move one but it died immediately.
I think digging up runners of established plants, or splitting large colonies is OK, but I wouldn't split a smallish plant. I would definitely not split a small A. 'Wild Swan' - it doesn't seem the most vigorous plant in the world.
You could take some root cuttings before you plant it if there's a fleshy root on the outside of the root ball. I took some 18 months or so ago from a bit of J. "Honorine Jobert" that I dug up because it was coming up where I didn't want it. I've found by experience that they don't divide or transplant well. The cuttings are in flower now, still in pots but only because for months the soil has been too dry to plant anything. Planting out is on the list of jobs for the next couple of weekends if we continue to have rain.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
