Designing for screening, colour and in shade -possible?

Hi all,

Now here and just starting to get into gardening. I'm happy with 2 of my boarders but stumps about what to do at the back. I want to:

  • Cover the houses at the back
  • Hide the fences
  • Have different heights, layers and colours....not just ferns or hostas

Thinking some bamboo and rhododendrons maybe a good start? Not adverse to moving things around either.... Not a fan of the overgrown buddleia personally :p

Any Ideas?

Maybe climbing roses on the fences ,trim the budlia but let it grow to hide that house ,whatever that is in the left hand corner may grow in time to hide that house ,oh yes and put something in the middle of that lawn to break it up ,the dog will enjoy running round and round it too .

Hydrangea quercifolia and H paniculata will tolerate some shade.

Next to, but not under trees though, right? Just looked both up and think they would look nice

Ideally away from the trees. Trees compete for water, light and nutrients. Hydrangeas are not drought tolerant.
