Strawberry Query

Nephew gave me few strawberry plants earlier this year. They have grown well but no strawberries which I understand would be the case this year.  I am trying to grow more from the runners. When I eventually cut them from the main plant  do I need to keep them in a cold frame over winter or do I just leave them outside?  Also what do I do with the original ones which I have in a pot?

One other question. How far apart should they be planted?

you need to plant in ground by winter or they will not
     survive in the pots overwinter.

are you planting in rows or beds?

  • I’ve left mine out in pots through the winter and they’ve survived.  I keep them protected close to a wall and they’re fine.
  • They’ll be absolutely fine in pots outside in a UK winter. As has been said, put them in a sheltered corner or a coldframe. 😊

Wargarden is in the USA and presumably has harsher winters than most of the UK.

I've found that strawberry plants are pretty hard to kill. I'd be surprised if they didn't survive the winter whatever you do with them ;)

I've never protected mine either. Even ones in very small pots - they just get pushed among shrubs or similar, or against a wall, as already said. They can take most weather in the Uk no problem.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Strawberries actually benefit from a period of cold to stimulate fruiting.  Some commercial growers, get frozen plugs, plant them into giant grow bags set up on benches. Apparently they grow and fruit within a couple of months.
