That's understandable. Most companies wouldn't want customers to run a debt with them.
My balance goes up until the autumn and back down towards zero by the spring. If there are changes in unit charges, there will always be enough in the credit to cover the jumps; until now. I have found Octopus very good at comms and flagging up potenial changes well ahead of time.
But, as I understand it, (generally) there's nothing to say you have to set up DDs. Before I had a smart metre I had to phone a reading in every month or quarter.

They haven't been very helpful @philippasmith2. Like @Fire, I'm happy to pay the same each month. This would normally mean being in credit for 6 months, debit for 6 months. They prefer me to be in credit all the time!
I'll change suppliers as soon as things calm down and I can find a cheaper fixed deal.
That's fair enough @Biglad and @Fire if you are happy with how/what you are paying. I only mentioned it as I've seen other posters commenting previously on how much over the top they seemed to be paying via their DD's. It's something of a minefield whatever you do I think and the latest assurances from the govt. don't particularly help
