The leaves on a Euonymus Alatus 'Red Cascade' are colouring up already. At the other end of the garden a Euonymus Alatus 'Compactus' are still green. Weird.
Leaf drop has started in earnest here. We have large London planes street trees and they usually start littering the roads about now, but it's more leaves than usual because of the drought. I did my first big sweep up yesterday and the garden and street is already covered again. Any big wind or rain will bring down more. The trees are pollarded every three years and this is our third year, so the drop is huge. From Now to Nov. Good for composting.
Very relieved to hear that leaf drop is not uncommon at this time of the year, and also the comment about trees dropping leaves to conserve moisture. I was very worried that some of our established trees might be in terminal decline. I do remember in past years, not in drought conditions like now, that the poor schoolchildren have only just broken up for the holidays and there were already signs of autumn.
They are now calling it a "False Autumn" as the trees are losing their leaves due to stress rather than Autumn coming early. It seems to be in the news at the moment.
