Tomato and cucumber “hydroponics”

I have a set up which allows the tomato and cucumber roots to find their way into a water reservoir. I top up the reservoir with Tomorite to the recommended dilution when needed so the roots are always in the feed. Results don’t seem too bad but I note on the Tomorite instructions to not store the diluted made up solution. Does anyone have any comments?

Probably because it has organic stuff in it (e.g. seaweed extract) which will decay over time when diluted.
It may not be an issue, but if it is, then you could drain and refill the reservoir.

I've noticed if I've left some in a watering can for about a day, there's a film that forms on the top

  • Good point. That must be what I’ve seen then. Wondered what it was. Like a brown scum. Thanks.

    Yup - that's the stuff.
I suppose you could get an aquarium pump and airstone to keep the reservoir fresh.
