home made trellis/support for climbers

Hello. What do people use for support against a fence, other than shop-bought trellis? Was hoping to use a combination of canes and string but the ground is way too dry to get them in at the moment. Please Show me what you have done, creatively? :)

It would depend on the eventual size/weight of the climber, but a simple screen made with roofing battens is easy to do, especially if it's going on a fence. Two horizontals - top and bottom, and then screw the battens on vertically.  You could do it the opposite way too if you prefer.  I have a free standing one which incorporates a couple of large planters.

Apart from that, many people just use vine eyes and wire.  :)

  • Ah yes was wondering about the vine eyes method. I'm not the handiest so easy is good for me... :)

I used vine eyes and wire for a climbing rose. For a shorter, lighter vine, I've used rolled fencing material. I just stapled directly to the horizontal fence rails. If you don't have the rails on your side, you may need to add some spacers for some breathing room behind the trellis.

If you make sure you have enough of them @Siobhancantgarden - ie the vine eyes at around every three feet apart horizontally, and attach the wire firmly.  The bottom one would be best at about a foot above soil level, and then space those wires no more than a foot apart vertically,  and that will be sturdy enough for most climbers to be tied onto.  :)
However, it also depends on the type of fence you have. If you don't have a solid enough surface between the posts, ie solid planks,  you may have to attach a vertical batten half way to take them. It will also depend on whether the fence is yours to attach anything onto.

Vine eyes are just screws with a loop on the end instead of a slot for a screw driver so no DIY skills required.
