No runner beans yet this year....

Hello all. I have no beans despite lots of flowers. It has been very hot, and I have kept the plant well watered but I'm now wondering if I'm just wasting a lot of water. Has this happened to anyone else?? Is it just too hot? They were fine last year.... :( French beans not much better, either. I've had about 10 very curled beans all summer; Perhaps I'm doing something wrong..... My garden is south facing....Any help/advice much appreciated. (Apologies for the sideways pic - no idea why that happened)

    Mine are the same.
Plenty of flowers which just drop off.
I was pleased to see 1 small bean yesterday - so there's hope :)
It's down to the hot weather.
Hopefully next week temps return to sort of normal, so should still get plenty in a few weeks - unless there's another heatwave..

Ours are cropping at perhaps a third of what is normal. The plants are ok but not as lush as we'd expect. They normally keep producing for a while yet so I'd keep them watered and hope for the best.

There you go. Cropping just a tiny bit off the photo means it’ll display the right way up.

I’ve had a fantastic crop of beans (self fertile variety) but even they have had a few shrivelled ones.

Hopefully when the temperatures drop a bit they’ll perk up again. I would say keep watering. That’s what we’re doing. A dose of tomato feed in the water once a week should help too.

    Good luck 🤞

There’s quite a lot of green on Siobhan’s beans,  I wonder if the ground is too rich in nitrogen,  lots of green and not many flowers?
I always stop my beans when they get to the top of the trellis.

no I definitely took it the right way.... ;)
  • I don't know how to stop them when they get too tall, & I haven't added any nitrogen - I did put some home made compost on top last weekend but other than that, just water. Fingers crossed something comes. I did spot a tiny baby one weeks ago but nothing came of it.

You stop them by cutting the tops off when they get to the height you can manage.
