Stone mulch without weed fabric

Hi all - I am planting garden beds that I’d like to top with decorative stones. My gut tells me it’s best to lay weed fabric underneath to best separate the soil from stones but I regret every time I use weed fabric and find from last experience that soil still ends up on top of the fabric under the stones. But I’ve never laid stones without it in a bed - would it be a nightmare?

Yes it would be a nightmare dilby. We inherited a cobbled bed that didn't have weed control fabric and it was a pain in the proverbial. Strongly advise that you don't go down that route.

Thanks so much for the help - I'll take your advice and put the fabric down!

I cleared my entire garden of gravel, and put it in various places around the beds - it works fine if it's thick. The membrane was vile, I had to keep pulling weeds that had got tangled in the fibres so the roots didn't all come out, and insects etc were also stuck in them.
