Mysterious root

Hi. I'm a keen gardener and my friend just started gardening and has been digging up the old soil and discovered this. I was wondering if anyone knows what it might be? Many thanks

    Hello there Dal and welcome to the forum. As you have hinted at, it is extremely difficult to identify anything from a piece of root such as you are showing in your pictures. It could be potted up and its growth, as it develops. may assist in the identification.
    The nearest plant in my garden that exhibits similarities to that is Geranium macrorrhizum.
