Its called self heal - prunella vulgaris.  It can be controlled by mowing but is much loved by bees and other insects. Why do you want to kill it?

It's really common in lawns, but will stay small if you mow it. I Iove it! It's also a really good remedy for all sorts of ailments, you can make a tincture or a tea from the flowers.

Basically sit on the 'grass' with a sharp instrument and dig it out bit by bit.

Usual weed n feed for lawns will kill it.  I let it flower and mow round it, the bees love it.

I also encourage it as a medicinal plant. Its lovely. It’s called prunella. Didn’t that used to be a girls name in the old days?
  • I think they're pretty. We have a few patches of these on the lawn and when they're in full bloom, they form lovely dark purple and green patches.
