When watering, just imagine a typical British downpour.. 😉
    That's about the right quantity.
  • But is there a rough amount of time as a guide?

Not really, it's easier to fill a bucket or watering can and give each a whole one.
  • That makes it a lot easier - I’ll just use a watering can per plant!

I do with new ones where the others don't need it, after they've established you 'just know' how much they need.. you get to know your plants. 😊

Just a quick question, I purchased my first Eryngium big blue today and followed the tips in this thread before planting. As this is stated to grow in dry, well drained soil, do I need to water this well until established? Our soil is quite well drained but I did add some grit/perlite just to avoid any winter wet.

     Thanks.

Yes, always water them in until their roots are strong - I water dry loving plants every 2-3 days for a couple of weeks, or until they're looking lively, then in the first year I water if it's been very hot, dry, and/or windy for more than a couple of weeks.

Great, thanks for the help! When watering, should you always water around the crown or is it ok to water direct where the growth comes from?

I'd just water around the base, underneath, just avoid getting water on the leaves if you water in the heat of the day as they can scorch.
  • What I should have said was does watering direct on the crown cause issues in terms of rot etc? For example, when applying a mulch, you avoid the crown - should I do the same when watering? Sorry for all these probably stupid questions but I’m always worried I’m doing stuff wrong!
