Confused, carrots instead of flowers?

Hi
I’m very confused/shocked and definitely questioning myself.

I bought a pack of chrysanthemum rainbow mixed seeds, followed the planting instructions and used totally fresh commercial compost. The seeds sprouted and I had lots of little seedlings which I duly potted on.  I did think at the time that some of the leaves looked a bit different and did wonder if I’d accidentally put delphinium seeds in the same tray, but then the delphinium seeds sprouted in their own tray, so all seemed good.

The seedlings grew, I gave a few away as I had so many and then planted the rest around my flower beds. That was a couple of weeks ago and although they’ve been watered I’ve not paid that much attention to individual plants, they all looked green and appeared to be doing well.

On closer inspection today though, I’ve realised that at least half of what I thought were mums are actually carrots.  I didn’t buy any carrot seed this year and haven’t knowingly sown any carrots.

I’m now questioning what the other plants from that tray are, they do have flower buds but their leaves don’t look like a mum I’ve ever grown before.

I’ve never had this before with commercially bought seed but is it something that has happened to you?

Can you show us some photos please?

The leaves of the annual chrysanths sold as Rainbow Mix by Fothergills etc do have quite feathery leaves ... not really like 'proper' chrysanthemums.

Can you see the leaves here?

I think there have been several instances recently of seeds - even from "reliable" sources - which have proved to be entirely different from the packet label/description.
It may be a good idea to contact the company concerned and see what they say. It could be that other clients have found the same as you and reported it. If that's the case, hopefully the supplier will look into the problem.
In the meantime, enjoy your carrots  ;)

@Dovefromabove they were the seeds I bought and looking at your photo maybe some of them could be ok.

Having looked at all the beds I planted I’d say over half are carrots

then I do have a couple like this

    And also these

If you think they are carrots, try pulling one up,  at that size they will have tiny carrots, it may put your mind at rest.

I really can't see anything there that I really think are definitely carrots ... I think you'll find that flowers will come along.

My family grows a lot of carrots http://www.suffolkproduce.co.uk/carrots.html  ;)

Me too Dove, I think the little one is a bit like a wild poppy.

I agree with Dove and think you have got what you sowed.

That’s settled it then,  always best to look if you’re not sure,     at least you’ll have a nice dinner,   I’d leave the rest to grow on.

Fair enough - you can't win them all :)
