Rose sucker query

Hilary_15Hilary_15 Posts: 76
Hi
I’m not sure if this is a sucker or a new shoot. It has seven leaves whereas the rest of rose only have five leaves on each stem but it also has a new bud forming. Can suckers produce buds? Can anybody help please?

Doesn’t look like a sucker to me. Suckers don’t usually have those reddish tones in the leaves.

Hopefully @Nollie and/or @Marlorena will be along soon with an authoritative ID.

Suckers come from below the graft, we can't see the base of the plant

Yes it is Gabriel Oak - well spotted!  Good job I didn't snap that off - I've been dithering for a good couple of weeks.  Thanks for the response

Can I ask -why has it got 7 leaves when all the other stems have 5?

.. take no notice of the number of leaves, on modern roses it doesn't mean anything..  if you look another time, this rose can have 3, 5 or 7 leaves on a stem..
