Sugary supermarket spuds😝

B3B3 Posts: 25,301
I am pig sick of having my meals rendered inedible by sugary potatoes. I have a rudimentary understanding of the science but that's not much good when you're choosing a bag of spuds.
Is there any way at all that you can tell that they're going to be sweet?
Are some varieties a better choice?

I used to think it was the weather, but I suspect it's poor and overlong storage
Jerseys , being seasonal, are ok but they aren't suitable for everything I want to cook.
At least with rice or pasta, you have a pretty good idea of the quality of what comes out of the package

Have they been kept in a fridge?

I don't know. I only bought the latest lot yesterday. Vivaldi. They were firm with a reasonably long  sell by date.. Used them today. They were stttt. And I didn't go for the cheapos just in case.

Sorry about another question … but were they described as ‘new’ potatoes or ‘baby’ potatoes?

Neither. I looked out for new. There weren't any in Sainsbury's. I didn't want baby as I already had a bag of little  jerseys. I just wanted some medium sized waxy or at least not floury  potatoes.

Any potato that has been stored to cold for to long will be sweet, which means pretty much any potato around right now that isn't "new"

I thought that might be the case. I think we used to fill the gap with Cyprus potatoes but I haven't seen any this year or last.

There have been Majorcan new potatoes around for a month or so, but we’re buying local new potatoes now. I agree with @Skandi … they’ve been stored too cold for too long … that turns the starches to sugars 🤢

I have a full spread of supermarkets within easy distance, but I suppose they're all the same. I'll stick to rice and pasta for a few weeks.
Fortunately my husband's palate lacks refinement so  the food wasn't wasted. I had a cheese sandwich😐

  • I'm wondering if you have a greengrocer nearby...
