Help! Hedge species? Disease?

Hi there,
I'm pretty new to all this. We have a hedge out the front of our house and it's in an awful state! Can anyone identify the species please? I understand it's not laurel, privet or box. But I have no other ideas?
Perhaps more importantly, can anyone identify the disease? I'm wondering if it's powdery mildew.
With a 'diagnosis' I can Google a treatment... but if you want to offer up suggestions for that too that would be great!

    I think it's a viburnum with a serious infestation of viburnum beetle - usually accompanied by an unpleasant smell
    It's not something I've had to deal with so not sure of the best treatment
    Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
    Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

    I agree, it's Viburnum Tinus, and it's suffering from the Viburnum Beetle. 

    See link for options. I'd cut the whole shrub right down and rake off the top two inches of soil and lay new mulch down.

    Thanks Pete & Borderline - it does indeed look like Viburnum (having Googled it!) and its beetle.
    It looks like I've missed the time of year to attack the larvae but at least I'll know for next year!

    Has anyone tried this? https://www.greengardener.co.uk/product/viburnham-beetle-nematodes/.  It's actually Nemasys fruit and Veg. I have a lot of viburnum and it's going to be devoured if I don't spend my nights out there hunting them. I really hope this work!

    Thanks dangermousie - I just ordered some, will bang it down and re-apply next April... won't know if it's worked until this time next year...

    Best of luck. I'm doing the same. I confess to spraying that prov.. something out of desperation once. I'm still feeling guilty. I really hope this works!

    We should know if it was effective this year. There should be less adults. It's impossible to get rid of all of them, but I'd be happy if it was enough to let the plants survive and not stink so much.

    Hi @d.roxburgh, any sign of our little nemesis yet? No sign here but it might be too early?
