Ilex crenata hedge
in Plants
Hi,
I’ve recently purchased root ball ilex crenata to form a hedge all around my lawn, am I right in saying they like acidic soil? If yes how do I know if my soil is acidic? Also planting them do I mix my soil (if acidic) with top soil and some sort of feed? I’ve never done this before and worried they will not do so well if I don’t prep the ground ready for them and feed them correctly.

If you are at all worried you can buy a soil testing kit like this one at a garden centre or online.

@turner.tanya, I wouldn't worry about your soil, it seems they are happy in most and in sun/part shade as well. I would be inclined to just dig in some bagged manure to beef your soil up and make sure it's damp before planting. When the plants arrive, soak them all for at least half an hour before you plant, you will probably have to do this some at a time unless you've lots of old buckets around!
Make sure they are planted at the same level as previously - you should be able to see a darker line around the trunk where they had been planted before.
Good luck.
Normally these are only sold/delivered root balled in hessian in winter.
I hope you are just getting ready for them to arrive later in the year.
Holly hate to be transplanted ...make sure that root ball never dries out.
Plant as soon as delivered and water well for the first year.
Ilex...common name Holly will grow in any soil...they are not fussy.
