Colour change of flower on chives & hostas

Has anyone else experienced chives plants or hostas changing the colour of their flowers?

I moved house in 2020, and they both used to give me purple or lilac flowers (Chives/Hostas respectively) but now they are both producing white flowers.  I thought maybe it was just last year, as they settled in, but it's the same this year. I find it very odd.

They have no problem growing and all my other plants are the same, with the same colour flowers.

I wondered if there was something I can do to get the colour to return.

Thanks
Miranda

This could be due to a difference in the pH (acidity/alkalinity) of your soil.  There's some more information on this link: Reasons Flowers Change Color: Chemistry Of Flower Color Change (gardeningknowhow.com)  I rather like the white chives!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
  • Thank you for the link. It probably is the soil. I can see some of the plants adjusting after the move. I have also dug in new fertilised soil too, to help renew it because it was a bed that was full of Hydrangeas which have a very specific soil.

The white is certainly different. But I did like the purple chive flowers. I feel that I have sent them albino! LOL
  • Okay, I'm going to test the PH, as it will also inform me about other plants that I feel are struggling. Thanks again for the link.

If there were hydrangeas in there before ,chances are that the soil is more on the ericaceous side. That could be your problem.
  • It explains why my Rhododendrons are all fine though! LOL but I do have a Pieris in there that hasn't changed colour and they like ericaceous. But I think the PH might be more suited to those types.
