I'm in a self - seeder quandary

B3B3 Posts: 25,264
I've been nurturing wildflowers and self seeders and they do really well. Too well, in a way. They've bedded into the premium spots in the garden and I'm reduced to trying to find new plants to plant in what's left.
I want to try new plants. Would you hoik them out to make space or appreciate what you already have?  Sometimes I'm in - it's my garden too - mode and sometimes I'm more tolerant.

Depends how you feel when you get up in the morning and go out in the garden.  You may be in a bad mood and therefore whip them out or you may be feeling quite cheerful ( and lazy) and therefore leave them be and enjoy them ;)

That's the way it goes @philippasmith2 . A person can get quite resentful in the garden centre but then I could spend a fortune on  slug delights or divas. But then , just maybe, I could plant something amazing  and wow you all on GG😐

For me it depends what the plant is. For example, I find it really hard to take out self seeded aquilegia, thalictrums and foxgloves - even when there's already way too many in the garden.
However, Forget-me-nots and a particularly thuggish brash pink hardy geranium get yanked out like weeds. They're allowed a small area where they look ok andwhere not much else grows but not allowed beyond their boundaries.

I love that some self seeders put themselves in places I would never think of and look much better where they choose.

It's a joy to pull out forget me nots. I like them for about a fortnight and then they go. No problem. Primrose are a real problem followed by pulmonaria ( bees like them I don't), teasel, centranthus , feverfew (getting very cheeky). I could go on and on but you get the point.

Primrose do seed themselves in my garden but they are a long way from being a problem (it's a relatively new, fairly large garden). Similarly with pulmonaria - but I'm starting to understand the problem with this one...

The primrose leaves lie flat. That's my main issue. In a few weeks, I'll pull off this year's leaves and leave the fresh new growth for next year - but there's an awful lot of them and I can't bear to pull the plants out😕

I was just going to say exactly the same.  I do hoik out the foxgloves and plant them at the back, usually but I see some have escaped that this year.

I think you should pull out all your fgmns, B, because they always end up driving you nuts.

I know that when I pull out a load of self seeders, they will keep coming through for a good few years. So, probably, if you pull out loads this year, you’ll get another season or two to design with what comes.

I pot up a lot of self seeders and give them away. Fgmns, and all the above could all find happy homes. You’d pay quite a bit in a shop.

I have all my common valerian away. They were delighted. I was delighted.

But I like them for a little while and I do so enjoy pulling them out. I suppose it's a bit like popping bubble wrap @Fire.
Also I've got this weird problem with totally obliterating anything . But then, I haven't got JKW.
