Partially rotten Gunnera crown

Last Autumn I split my large Gunnera plant into 3, 2 pieces roughly the same size & a small piece, I pot the small piece into a pot as wasn't sure it would make it but its now going great guns. The two larger pieces I put back into the ground & covered with straw over the winter, they're now starting to grow but are well behind the pot piece also a section of both in the ground appear to be rotten, not sure why as I haven't watered it at all over the winter., should I be concerned & removing the rotten section even if it means splitting the plants again ?
