Thank you - well it's aptly named! I too knew the first as a mint moth, but my FSC guide gave the alternative name. I doubt I'll ever do any moth trapping but I'm finding myself much more alert to them these days, so this thread is great 🙂

There's a very similar moth to the mint moth that's called the Common Purple and Gold. I think this common name is used to prevent confusion between the two. Moth common names can be a bit like that, you end up with some called the "not as big as the big moth but bigger than the medium-sized moth moth".
Your second moth appears to be a Toadflax Brocade but I'm not 100% on that.

Yes, there's three alongside each other on the FSC guide called 'Beautiful Yellow Underwing', 'Broad Bordered White Underwing' and 'Small Dark Yellow Underwing' 🤣
