Clematis Montana

Hi all! I planted a 30cm Montana in lockdown and it gone crazy! Last year it looked lovely but this year it’s extremely woody and most of the flowers are over next doors fence! Should I cut this right back? I’m not overly fussed about it being so huge

    Yes is the simple answer.  :)
    It's better to have horizontal wires or trellis  along the fence [?] from low down, so that you can train the new growth in, and get better coverage, and more of the flowers on your own side  ;)

    Great. Can I literally cut it to the ground and add the wires???

    Cut back to where you have some decent joints, or around a foot to 18 inches, depending on how the base looks. It'll sprout back. Easy enough to get the wires in from about that height.  :)

    A Montana will want to grow 30ft or more. It will just grow straight up and over into your neighbours garden unless you train it along horizontal wires on your side of the fence.
