Perennials for half barrel

Evening,

I have an empty half wooden barrel (40cm deep x 65cm wide) that will be in full sun - I’d like to grow a perennial in it but I’m unsure what my options would be.

I’d like something that would cover the surface area so possibly a hardy geranium?

Any suggestions though would be much appreciated!

I wondered about G Rosanne but wondered if it would look a bit flat. It would trail over the edge which would be lovely and you just cannot beat it when it comes to how long it flowers.

That's a good size to take several plants.  If you like dahlias, you could put one in the middle and surround it with plants that spill over the edge like a small ivy, trailing pelargonium or brachycome.  A visit to a local garden centre and looking at their seasonal tubs and hanging baskets will give you other ideas for "spillers".  Other perennials that look good in containers include Salvia, Nepeta, Geum and ornamental grasses.
