Rock Roses

One of my rock rose plants died, when I was removing it I was on the hunt for cuttings. Although I found 3 stems growing, very soft, wispy and elongated, I was unable to remove them with a heel as they were growing from a tough multi stemmed joint. I have trimmed the thick stems back as far as I can and buried them in a pot of compost with the shoots still attached. I am wondering if I should remove the live stems and propagate them as soft wood cuttings  on their own, in sandy soil.
Has anyone tried propagating these plants, if so, how?
