Acer indentification
Hello,
I’m new to the forum so forgive me for leaping straight in with a question!
We have been lucky enough to move to a new house recently with the most magnificent established Acer collection on a half acre plot. We have counted 26 so far - they range from shrubs size to beautiful trees, colours from deep burgundy to almost fluorescent orange. Truly gorgeous.

I bought a book ‘Japanese Maples’ by J.D. Vertrees (very apt!) but this is more about care and propagation than an identifying tool. Can anybody recommend a book, website or society that might help? I’d love to know what they are and learn more about their care.
Thank you
Lizzie 😊

Your garden sounds fabulous.
Acers are very tricky to identify as there are many hundreds of varieties many of which look very similar.
Their care is about the same for most other than some will tolerate sun more than others.
If you can post some photos we'll do our best to try and match them up with names.
I don't know of any books, but Google will give you plenty to trawl though -

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
The Vertree book I own is an A -Z book on Acers.
Co written/updated by Peter Gregory who was THE Acer expert at Westonbirt.
It has masses of pic.
It is certainly not just about care and propagation.
Having said that it is not easy to tell one Acer palmatum dissectum from another.
We used to have 220 named Acers in our old garden. Now probably a housing estate .
Might I suggest you try just one at a time.
Visit specialist nurseries that grow and sell them and take along leaves to compare them. Join the international Acer society if you really get interested...there you will Acer experts world wide
Basically just enjoy them and do not get hung up on the name.

All my pics are named and often show whole tree and leaf detail .
