Companion planting suggestions, please!

Tanty2Tanty2 Posts: 218
Hi all - I have a very happy rose in a very large pot (128L) and it could do with some friends for the summer - including some stuff that trails.  I'd appreciate any suggestions for companion planting that'll keep the rose happy and make the pot look lush :)  The rose is Mortimer Sackler, a soft pink.  Thanks

A lot of people recommend salvias for underplanting roses as they can help prevent blackspot (apparently!).

They're not a trailing plant but there are a lot of colour choices which would complement the pink including blues and purples. Choose a tender perennial salvia if you just want it for this summer, as these can be grown as annuals.

My favourite trailing plant is Blue Rock Bindweed (another tender perennial). It's beautiful.

Brachycome (Swan River Daisy) has a cascading habit and bright daisy flowers in either blue, purple or white.  It will add softness and colour to your pot.  I also use trailing Lobelia in pots, also available in a variety of colours.  Both plants will complement your rose and not compete aggressively!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
