    It looks shrubby rather than herbaceous. Has a shrub been removed from there recently that could have left a root behind to regrow?

    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    Cannot see if leaves are opposite or alternate.

    Weigela ..looks a good suggestion.
