@nutcutlet ah ok, the berberis we have in our hedge looks completely different to this! It has orange berries and green almost cutout leaves rather than smooth oval with yellow flowers!
Is it a particular type then? @GardenerSuze I think initially on walking past it smelt nice but then I had a sniff after your comment and er yeah it’s not actually that pleasant!
I believe your one may be Berberis julianae. Pendulous clusters of tiny golden flowers, huge thorns in groups of 3, leaves with lethal prickles. Compare...see...

I like the smell, although I don't have a great sense of smell, so perhaps that has something to do with it
